Medical Office Assistant

In this program, students will learn how to organize a medical office, as well as be trained to prepare and administer basic medical office tests. Students will learn how to assess and prioritize patient appointment requests, and respond to patients’ basic questions about their medical condition and prescriptions. In addition, students will learn general office procedures and administration including the use of medical billing software package. Students will also receive WHIMIS, First Aid and CPR training and certification. This program upholds the highest possible level of standards and it keeps current with the industry and employer requirements. Upon graduation, students are prepared to begin career as an Admitting Clerk, Emergency Room Admitting Clerk, Medical Secretary, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Receptionist, Medical Billing Clerk or Medical Office Assistant.

Education Requirements

Grade 12 / GED or mature student status

English Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through prior education in English at grade 10 level or higher or through an English language assessment test (IELTS 6 or equivalent).

Course Content

Success Strategies

This module will introduce students to the skills and insights that will help them to get the best out of this and any other learning experience, and make successful transitions into their chosen career and maximize potential in life. They will be exposed to tools and techniques that will enhance their understanding of themselves, including; skills and qualities, interests and values and how they learn.

Keyboarding Skills

Students will be introduced to correct keyboarding techniques and typing procedures. Course content focuses on concepts for skill for skill building and speed improvement. Upon completion, students should accurately type at least 10 words per minute faster than at the beginning of the course

Introduction to Computers

The first component of this course is designed to introduce students to basic computer literacy through familiarization with the components that make up a computer. Students will also look at the Windows operating system to learn how to manage a computer on a regular basis. This course is also designed to introduce students to considerations for living online. Students will look at what the Internet is and how e-mail has made a huge impact on communicating with others, as well as look at how to find information on the Internet and avoid risk to personal security while online.

Employment Strategies

This module will introduce students to the skills and insights that will help them to undertake effective job research and job search activities, create effective resumes and cover letters and develop confident interviewing skills.
It also provides useful guidance on professional practice and how to make a positive impression in the first 90-days of the job and beyond.

Accounting Fundamentals Level I

This module is intended to provide the trainees with a general background of the fundamentals of accounting so that they understand the daily transaction procedures that exist in business. Trainees are introduced to double entry bookkeeping including debits and credits, assets, liabilities, equities, journalizing transactions, posting of accounts to ledgers and preparing a trial balance. Trainees are also introduced to financial statements and to adjusting and closing accounts.

Basic Medical Terminology

This module is designed to introduce students to the language of medicine and basic terminology. It introduces the basic of medical word formation using prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms. Terms pertaining to the body as a whole will be discussed. It also teaches the student the proper pronunciation of medical words and their correct spelling in order to increase the student’s ability to communicate effectively within their profession.

Anatomy and Physiology

This module will introduce students to anatomy and physiology of the various systems of the human body. It is designed to increase the students’ medical terminology. The body systems covered in the module are: the urinary system, male & female reproductive systems, digestive system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, blood system, lymphatic and immune systems, musculoskeletal system, skin, sense organs, and the endocrine system. In addition, oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, psychiatry, and pharmacology will be introduced.

Clinical Procedures

Students will learn techniques and procedures used to prepare and administer basic procedures and tests utilized in medical offices. Students receive WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certifications via external training and Examination.

Medical Office Procedures

Students will examine the necessities required for operating a smooth and efficient office environment. Topics covered include basic filing techniques, telecommunications, time management and organizational skills. Students will also learn the techniques of manual based appointment scheduling. They will learn how to assess and prioritize calls (telephone triage), and to most effectively schedule the physician’s limited time. Students are also introduced to four types of billing in BC.

Office Procedures

Students will examine the necessities required for operating a smooth and efficient office environment. Topics covered include basic filing techniques, telecommunications, time management and organizational use of general office equipment.

Customer Service

Students will learn a variety of effective Communication methods for the modern business office. Topics include written communications, forms of grammar in the writing process, outlining, business letter writing and collaborative writing. The student will be rounded out in a broad sense and be able to select the proper method when required.

Pharmacology

Students will be introduced to the basics of pharmacology, including pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and bioavailability. Dosage formulations, routes of administration, and medication errors will be discussed. Major body systems and the drugs used to treat disorders within them will be examined. Students will develop the ability to alert the pharmacist to actual and potential drug therapy related problems, including possible addictions or addictive behaviour.

Medical Billing

All businesses need to invoice for services rendered and collect their revenues as quickly and efficiently as possible. Doctors’ revenue comes primarily from the provincial medical insurance scheme. Students will be introduced to, and practice the procedures, requirements, and codes promulgated by the provincial government for the invoicing and recovery of the doctors’ fees from the provincial medical insurance plan.

Medical Transcription

Transcription is integral to the efficiency of the medical doctor’s practice, providing the documentary records on patient cases that the physician is required by law to maintain. Students will be introduced to the process of medical transcription using actual dictated medical data, in different accents. The emphasis of the module is on proper use of grammar, punctuation and accuracy.

Duration

The course for the Medical Office Assistant students are expected to complete approximately 540 hours to successfully complete this program.
